Chapter 7
âWant to come shopping with me?â Melodie asked me after school on Thursday. She sounded almost shy.
âIâd love to,â I said. âWhat are we shopping for?â
âLissaâs birthday is in a couple of weeks,â Melodie said, and we started walking toward the shopping mall. âWith everything thatâs been going on, I havenât even thought about what to get her.â
âI canât believe sheâll actually be eight,â I said. âI remember when she was born.â
âI stayed at your house that night,â Melodie said. âIt was the first time I ever did.â
âWeâd just gotten to be friends,â I said. âYou didnât want to sleep at all that night. You kept slipping over to the telephone, waiting for it to ring.â
âThe twins teased me so much,â Melodie said. âAnd I decided I wanted anything, just as long as it wasnât a brother.â
âI told you you didnât want a brother,â I said. âThat was the first thing I ever really said to you. Boy, was I happy when you had a baby sister.â
âI was so happy then,â Melodie said. âListen to me. Iâm fifteen years old, and Iâm going around reminiscing about the good old days.â
âWell, these days arenât so good,â I said. âI guess itâs natural.â
âThese days are awful,â she said. I waited for her to continue. Melodie laughed. âYou look so tragic,â she said. âHave I been that awful lately?â
I nodded.
âPoor Elaine,â she said. âI know it isnât your problem.â
âIt is, too,â I said. âIf youâre my best friend then itâs my problem, too. I donât like seeing you so unhappy.â
âToday Iâll be happy,â she promised. âShopping for Lissa always makes me happy.â
âMomâs birthday is coming up next month, too,â I said. âI should look for something for her while Iâm here.â
âI got her a book by Carl Sagan,â Melodie said. âDoris has been so nice to me lately, I want to get her something. And Sagan believes in life in outer space, too, so I figured sheâd like the book.â
âI donât believe you already have a present for my mother,â I said. âI havenât gotten anything for Lissa yet.â
âI saw the book and it made me think of her,â Melodie said. âItâs just a paperback. Itâs no big deal.â
âMaybe Iâll get her a hardback of the same book,â I said. âThen sheâll know which one of us loves her more.â
Melodie laughed again. I couldnât remember the last time Iâd heard her laugh twice in a minute. Maybe that was my fault. I might not have been as funny as usual with Melodie. You never knew when humor would be welcome, though.
âLetâs start with the toy shop,â Melodie said when we got to the mall. âAnd then if thereâs nothing there, weâll get ice cream sundaes.â
âWhat if there is something there?â I asked.
âWeâll get sundaes, anyway,â she said. âIf your teeth can stand the corruption.â
âDo you know Mom gave me a traveling toothbrush and a little container of toothpaste?â I asked, trying not to sound shrill. âFor me to use whenever I visit Steveâs mother.
